Judge's Critique:
What a honor to get to judge for your club. I have had many years of watching and learning your breed. I enjoyed being introduced to the breed in your country and was fortunate to lease a dog to be shown in the US when the breed was finally recognized in our country. To this day, this dog remains one of the nicest I have seen in the breed ring.
My impressions of this entry on this day show many signs of improvement in the breed structurally. I was please to see many sound dogs. This is a basic function and foundation for the breeder to help move a breed forward. You must have dogs that are sound and moving well. I was happy to see this in most cases. In my opinion, the fronts are in better shape than the rears. There are many dogs that are too long in hock, too close when gating away and angulation in the rear still a challenge. The rear assembly and construction of this breeds is difficult. To get the moderate bend to the rear stifle and the low hock required many bone lengths come into play. It is a delicate balance in the rear. We do not want them over angulated or high in hock. So, this still needs some work.
For the most part, the dogs were of good and correct temperament. A few needed more time and socialization but overall all seems agreeable on the day.
My two class winners were to my liking. the winners dog was the well made and correct in head type, sound and good size for age. He will only get better and better. The RWB was a lovely type dog with an excellent head but a fraction too long in the mid-section for me. His type was spot on.
Winners bitch is a super bitch with lots of breed quality. She is strong and sound in all directions. I was impressed with her quite a lot and she seemed to improve with exposure.
The eventual winner was a lovely strong bitch champion. I was impressed with her movement from the side and in all directions. she was feminine and kind in eye and head. She was purposeful in construction and represented all that I would want in a broad bitch. She would be great to breed from as she has so much right for the breed. Her ability to move, her color, and proportions, her strength and attitude alone made her a winner for me. She never let me down whether she was gaiting or stacked. I was very pleased to be able to reward her. The BOS dog, was also strong in his breed qualities. He was very pleasing in head with great expression and length. He is masculine and yet not overdone. He is a good mover and smart on the side.
This entry was consistently better in overall quality that I have seen in recent entries. I was pleased to see dogs with quality bone density and body type.
For me the breed is should retain moderation in all of the breed qualities. We have to breed dogs to stay true to the original intent. This is not a stylized version of an Irish. This is rounder, more moderate and less extreme. As breeders, you should focus on your breeds elements to define your breeding program. The head, proportions and angulation, together with the color/pattern in the breed, will define your kennels.
